Music | Congregation Beth Israel

Music is paramount in Judaism, especially in prayer. The book of Psalms is chock-full of references to music and musical instruments, indicating its unique place in the world of spirit.

We believe that music provides nourishment to our souls and we aim to provide a service that is music-rich, joyful and fun.

Shabbat services (both Friday Night and Shabbat morning) at CBI include a diverse mix of Jewish styles including traditional; secular/contemporary; Sephardic; Hassidic; and Israeli all performed by Rabbi Abe on his guitar.

We also have a robust musical culture at CBI, with many musical guests coming through our doors. Our goal is to invite diverse Jewish talent who will enhance our shul with the gift and art of their music.

Some highlights, include Matt Check, Stuart Markus, and Lori Weber seen below.

Matt Check:

Matt Check is the founder of the Bluegrass Kabbalat Shabbat Experience.

As a guest performer at our Friday Night services, he combines a joyous fusion of traditional and newly composed Jewish melodies combined with the vitality of Bluegrass rhythms.  Enjoy some of Matt’s tunes here.

Stuart Markus of Gathering Time Band has been a fixture on Long Island’s music scene since the mid-1990’s. He has performed for our CBI community at special events and combines folk-rock tunes from the 60’s and 70’s, as well as Broadway Classics with Jewish connections.
